Letter Home - Charles C Ward

Dear Henritta,

Lincoln was sadly assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, but he was also killed by the federal troops when he was found in a barn on Garret Farm in Virginia. With his last words being “Tell my mother, I died for my country”. The union also gained Richmond. But anyways I’ll go home very soon, are the kids doing well? Don’t tell them about this exciting news about me going back. I want it to be a surprise. But I’ll be back soon
                                                                                                   Sincerely, Charles C Ward
